Shruti Natak

The focal point of the Natya Mela – 2007 is the ‘Shruti Natak’. The concept of ‘Shruti Natak’ was first introduced not so long ago, may be, only 30 years. In 1977, on the occasion of 50th aniversary of Calcutta Radio Station in Rabindra Sadan, Calcutta, an abridged version of ‘Kapalkundola’ was presented. It was neither a ‘stage drama’ per se, nor a ‘reading’ of the dramatized version of the famous story by BankimChandra. What was it? According to the playwright, Surjo Sarkar, this was the first ‘Shruti Natak’ in Bengali. Since its inception, ‘Shruti Natak’ encountered many criticisms from even many eminent personalities. Yet its popularity is increasing. To recognize the contribution of this new form of drama, Natya Mela – 2007 decided to make it a ‘Focal Point’ of its 3rd year celebration. Natya Mela 2007 will present three short ‘Shruti Natak’, of approximate 10 minutes duration from three different groups.
