ANTIGONE

ANTIGONE  | Duration : 2 hours

Playwright: Sophocles

Directed by Koushik Sen

The play opens in a war devastated Thebes in which both the sons of Oedipus  Polynieces and Eteocles died fighting each other for the throne. Creon, the new king of Thebes has declared that the dead body of Eteocles will be given a royal burial while denying the same for Polynieces whose body will not be sanctified by holy rites and will lie unburied in the battlefield.Amongst the general chorus  enters Tiresias who shares words of wisdom .Creon while making a speech clearly states that for him the supreme  power lies in the hand of the state and all are bound to swear their obedience to the state. Anything otherwise will not be accepted. Antigone and Ismene are then seen talking about Creon’s decision of the burial of their  brothers .

Antigone wants to bury Polynieces’  deadbody, in defiance of Creon’s edict.Ismene refuses to help her fearing death penalty and is unable to stop Antigone from doing the last rites to Polynieces, causing Antigone to disown her out of anger.A  sentry reports the symbolic burial of the deadbody of Polynieces. A furious Creon orders him to find out the culprit or face death himself. The sentry now returns  bringing along with him Antigone, as she returned to repeat the funeral rites. Creon questions her and she doesnot deny her actions. Ismene later tries to confess falsely to the crime. In the end creon orders the sisters’ imprisonment. Haeamon,Creon’s son enters to pledge allegiance to his father, even though he is engaged to Antigone. When he gently tries to persuade his father to spare antigone and justifies her actions the discussion detoriates;Haemon leaves vowing not to see his father ever again. Creon, the agitated dejected father orders to bury Antigone alive in a cave sparing Ismene. Antigone is then taken away to her living tomb. Now we find Creon convincing Antigone to forget about the burial of her brother ,marry Haemon and live happily. Antigone declines every offer saying that she wants to live life on her own terms even if that means her death . A messanger enters to tell the chorus that Haemon had killed himself. Later the chorus of the Theban elders also inform creon about eurydice’s suicide and her curse to the murderer of her son.Creon,a broken man  meets his doom.
